This is the year that the COVID-19 pandemic was declared to be no longer a global health emergency. But even though case counts are down in 2023, it’s not as if everything is back to normal. Despite concerns, health officials classify it as a variant of interest, with the overall risk deemed low by the World Health Organization. It seems comparable to other circulating omicron variants and doesn’t appear to cause more severe disease. Existing vaccines, including boosters, have continued to protect against severe illness and death.
