Several student podcasts produced for NPR’s Student Podcast Challenge highlight the growing concern among young people regarding climate change and its related impacts. The Vashon Island fifth-graders emphasize the importance of wildfire safety measures and explore the lasting effects of wildfires and wildfire smoke on their lives. Another podcast series from a sixth-grade class in Georgetown, California, delves into the Mosquito Fire of 2022 and features interviews with local firefighters. Additionally, a group of middle schoolers from Peak Academy in Bozeman, Montana, discusses water shortages in their community, tracing the history of their water supply and considering conservation efforts in a warming world. These student podcasts provide valuable insights into the perspectives and concerns of the younger generation when it comes to climate-related issues in their communities.
