Healthcare workers, faced with the growing impact of climate change, are advising patients on protecting themselves from extreme weather. A notable concern is burns from contact with hot pavement, which can be challenging to treat and slow to heal. Asphalt burns, in particular, can penetrate deeply and often occur at joints, requiring extended hospital stays. With 73% of U.S. residents experiencing at least one extreme heat day in 2023, doctors are expanding discussions with patients to address evolving climate-related threats and develop plans for protection against health risks associated with climate change.
